Striving towards the Magic of the Classic Collie

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead; his eyes are closed - Einstein

A guide to the Standard of the Rough Collie

"The perfect Collie has yet to be born, but we can have tremendous fun in trying to breed the elusive star!"  Angela Harvey - Wicani Kennels

The Rough Collie is a strong, responsive, active dog, carrying no useless timber, and standing naturally straight and firm. The deep, moderately wide chest, shows strength. The slopping shoulders and well bent stifle indicate grace and speed, and the face shows high intelligence. The Rough Collie presents and impressive, proud picture fo true balance, each part being in harmonious proportion to every other part and to the whole.

Except for the technical description that is essential to the Standard and without which no Standard for the guidance of breeders and judges is adequate, it could be stated quite simply that no part ever seems to be out of proportion to any other part. Timidity, frailness, sulleness, viciousness, lack of animation, cumbersome appearance and lack of over all balance impair the general character of the Rough Collie.

The Rough Collie is breed of great beauty and should appear as a dog standing with great beauty and impassive dignity.

When we decided that we wanted to take our ownership into the level of showing and breeding, we had an image in our head of what we wanted  for our line of Collies. we wanted to interpret what we perceived to be the perfect Collie and with this in mind we set out to find the perfect Stud for our bitch. We had a small dictionary of words that we would like our Collies to be associated with. My husband and i decided that our dogs should have great beauty and stand as if to attention (with impassive dignity). The movement should be effortless and construction should be sound. The neck should appear of great length and the hocks of our dogs should be well bent in order to create drive and effortless movement. They should have no trace of aggresiveness what so ever and trace of timidity. The balance and construction of the dog was of great importance to us and upon choosing the Stud for our bitch, this had to be spot on.

With the above in mind, we had found a kennel that had everything we had in mind. Our chosen Stud for our bitch was the great Wicani Whats NEw Pussycat (Khan) bred, owned and loved by Angela and Keith Harvey of the world famous Wicani Kennels.

On appearance, Khan fills the eye with great beauty and stands with that impassive dignity so important to the breed. He has no sign of aggression or timidity what so ever, in fact, Khan was so confident and so eager to show himself off to us. He is of sound construction and drives on well bent hocks. He is, in my opinion, the best moving Collie around today. He simply floats on air.

Strobroy Collies will be forever indebted to Wicani for the strong foundations that they gave us in helping produce our first litter and of course through our very own Caliph and Phoenix.
